The town of Reggio Emilia, whose streets wind through medieval-type buildings, lies along the Roman road Via Emilia, and once belonged to the Longobard duchy.

After the Carolingian conquer the town found itself under the rule of several succeeding families up to the 17th century, when it became annexed to the duchy of Modena.

Evidence of its past is found in buildings as the Madonna della Ghiara Basilica, a jewel of 16th-century art ornated by frescos of Bolognan school. The Basilica also hosts the celebrated Guercino's "Crucifixion".

A traditional weekly market is held in S. Prospero square, facing the Balisica by the same name known for its extraordinary 15th-century wooden choir.
Connoisseurs of fine traditional food and local specialties will not be disappointed by the shops in the town centre, which will satisfy any gourmet visiting the town.
