A thriving
port ever since the days of Onorio, who transferred
the capital of the Roman Empire from Milan to Ravenna,
the town lies in the North-Eastern side of the Romagna
plain.
Ravenna is surrounded
by lagoons and wide stretches of water; the town
centre is only 7 km from the seaside.
The town is rich in historical monuments and pieces
of art, also thanks to its historical relevance
and the progression in its territories of the rule
of the barbarians led by Odoacre, of the Byzantines
and Theodoric, king of Ostrogoths. |
|
Besides its historical relevance, todayRavenna
is still at the centre of cultural events and international
festivals, ranging from theatre to classical music and
jazz.
Ravenna is also known for it pine-forest, a
natural paradise rich in green oasis and parks. Yet the
town is renown mostly for its Byzantine mosaic and Roman
art.
The Cathedral
Baptistery (also known as Neonian or Orthodox
Baptistery), the 10th-century bell tower and the nearby
baroque Cathedral,
provide one of the city's most impressive views.
Visitors should not miss a visit to the extraordinary
mosaics from the Mausoleum
of Galla Placidia, Sant'Apollinare
Nuovo and San
Vitale. The Mausoleum
of Theodoric and the S.
Apollinare in Classe Basilica, not far from the
twon centre, host several mosaics and the only remains
of the ancient port of Classe.
The bars, cafés and shops in Piazza del Popolo
are the heart of the the town's social life.
