Piacenza, located
between the Po river and the Apennines, is characterised
by its red brick buildings. Behind a deceiving air
of aesthetic austerity the city hides a pleasant,
harmonious atmosphere.
The romanic Cathedral,
dating back to the 12th century,
Palazzo del Comune, the ancient town
hall also known as "Il Gotico", and the
Farnese equestrian monuments
in Piazza dei Cavalli, are the most prominent
works of art cherished among the right-angle crossroads
of the medieval town.

| The Farnese dynasty ruled the
city for a long time. Pope Paul III united Parma
and Piacenza into the Grand Duchy of Parma and
Piacenza.
The inland and its charming hills provide pleasant
surprises to lovers of hiking and excursions.
Castell'Arquato,
a fascinating set of medieval buildings, makes
for a visit that should not be missed, not far
from the archaeological excavations of Veleia.
