Located in the Padana Valley, between the rivers
Secchia and Panaro, Modena
is the second most densely populated
city in Emilia-Romagna after
Bologna.
The city prides itself with the famous artistic
collections gathered when Modena
was capital of the Duchy of Este, and with the magnificent
white limestone Romanesque
Cathedral.
Piazza
Grande , the Cathedral
and the Bell
Tower have been declared Cultural
Patrimony of Mankind by the UNESCO.
The gothic Tower, standing out behind the Cathedral,
is also known as the 'Ghirlandina'. It is 88 metres
in high and the symbol of the city. |

Il Ducal
Palace dates back to
the 17th century. It currently hosts the seat of
the Military Academy. The building, built by architect
Avanzini, is among the most prestigious Baroque
buildings in Italy. The
rich art gallery at the Galleria Estense and the
volumes kept in the ancient Library attest the high
cultural level the Este dinasty brought about.
Modena's
artisan tradition has been handed down for many
centuries, and visitors will surely come across
it in every little corner of the city, in the traditional
goods up for sale in little markets and elegant
shops. |
