Ferrara is located
a short distance from the Po delta, at the heart
of a thriving agricultural area.
The mediaeval buildings in the town centre are almost
untouched and, along with the town's imposing Renaissance
architectural structure, make Ferrara
one of the most important art cities in Italy.
Ferrara presents
its visitors with both the pleasure of enjoying
the view of its impressive buildings while taking
a walk in the town centre, and the chance to visit
the many art shows and specialistic exhibitions
hosted by the town's museums attracting tourists
and academics from all over Italy.

| The town centre,
closed to cars and accessible only to pedestrians
and bicycles, has been declared Cultural Patrimony
of Mankind by the
UNESCO.
The Ferrara
that tourists can admire today looks just as the
city planned out by the Estensi
- the noble family that ruled Ferrara
up until the end of the 16th century - did.
During the Renaissance the town became the cultural
centre par excellence among artists and
scientists: the Estense court hosted, among the
others,
Ludovico
Ariosto
and
Torquato
Tasso; Girolamo Frescobaldi was appointed
director of the Accademia Musicale, while Dosso
Dossi became an influent master of painting in
the local scene.
